The main problem is trying to stay ahead of the game. So many people don't want to be left behind so they spend there whole career trying to stay close to the competition or what ever is new. Like you said, setting the new standard for everyone else to follow is ideal, not easy to accomplish. In order to do so, with agreement, you need to take big risk and be ready to adapt to change.
