I can see what you mean with the serif font. I had that a number of different ways and really liked it as times new roman - but you're right that it probably isn't the best when viewed as a part of a whole. I can also see the instructables point, but with everything else boxed in - even the logo - that might seem inconsistent. And I would get rid of containing the latest: reviews block, and make it more like a quick rundown in columns of each one - kind of like the little blocks that appear on Instructables. Other than that, it's a great direction for the design.
